Learning

My thoughts on children and learning:

Children need free time to learn things on their own and to explore their surroundings.
Children need time in nature.
Children are naturally curious and inquisitive.
Children need space and independence.
Instruction is not necessary for learning to occur.
Learning should be fun.
In the appropriate time and setting, learning will happen seamlessly.
It is easy to learn things you have interest in.
Learning is not confined to certain hours of the day or days of the week.
When children are going about their day doing normal things, they are learning.
Tests are not necessary to measure learning.
Children should have a voice in deciding what they want to learn.
Learning can happen anywhere, anytime, and in any situation.
Playing IS learning.
Play is essential.
Given a rich and stimulating environment, children will learn every day.

When people ask me "So, why DO you homeschool?" it's hard to answer. It feels deeply personal to me and depending on the person asking, it usually makes me feel uncomfortable. For me, it's much easier to talk about what I DO believe about learning and life and children, rather than trying to explain why I don't send my children to school. I think taking that approach helps to keep things positive  For us, homeschooling was a natural extension of the way we have been parenting since becoming parents. It is deeply rooted in the way we live and the ideas we stand behind. I read recently that one of the biggest misconceptions about homeschooling it that the schooling happens at home. This is a huge truth for us. Every time we step foot out of our front door, I view it as a new adventure and a new opportunity for learning, growth, and exploration. Learning and living life as a family is what we do best.

We value creativity and art.

Carefree.

Sometimes homeschoolers even get to ride on school buses.

Geocaching.

Whole Foods tour with other homeschoolers.

The one who is never afraid to touch something a little scary.

One of our favorite places, the library.

Working on some math.

Bird watching.

We plan to reevaluate things each year and with each child. We have no long-term plans for homeschooling, but hope to always remain open to whatever works best for our family as we grow and change over time.

Ezra Reading!

I took this video of Ezra THREE months ago and I've been wanting to share it for a while, but I just haven't yet for some reason. That sort of seems to be the theme of my life these days. Wanting to get "things" done and never being able to do said "things" because I'm busy doing all the "things" I have to do every day. It's pretty much an endless cycle. But anyway, this video is so so precious! My Ezra is so so precious. He loves Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see? just like Cambria did. It's a great book for non-readers because it's repetitive and easy to memorize which gives the kids such excitement and confidence when they can "read" it on their own. Books are my kid's favorite and I swear they learn half of the things they know from them.

He's already turned into the middle child who sometimes gets lost in the shuffle, so I savor any alone time the two of us have. He was reading the pages to himself over and over so I picked up the camera to record a little bit. I love his feet and I love that he thinks the frog is missing before it magically appears again.

Cambria read this same book in this video. And I just realized that they were very close in age when these videos were taken. Ezra 25 months, Cambria 26 months.

Making Colors

Recently I discovered an extremely fun way for Cambria to explore and learn more about colors.
All you need: food coloring + water!
It can get a bit messy, so I just have her in clothes I don't care about or I just strip her down.
{But actually Cambria loves being naked so usually I don't have to do anything}
I fill a bunch of small glass bowls with water and let her go at it.
We can make primary colors or mix the primary colors to make new colors.
Cambria loves learning new things so seeing two colors make one is an absolute thrill for her.
Plus she just loves being able to squeeze and play with something that seems like it should be off limits.
Perfect way to teach light, medium and dark.
Her favorite thing to do {and mine} is to make a rainbow.
Of course.
